Spot on mate! I also posted earlier that its a bit interesting that the US has had 1,000 military "advisers" in Mauritania and now the head of security orchetrates a successful coup. Hmmmmmmm.... I reckon the yanks and the Mauritanian military saw that the old President's approach to dissent was only going to encourage radicals/terrorists and that the best way forward was to replace him and lead the country towards true democracy. No ... don't imagine that I have rose coloured glasses or that I think the yanks are necessarily the good guys (I disagreed with the whole Iraq war strongly) .. but the above is a possibility. I hope it turns out well for the Mauritanian people. It was very likley that the old regime would have siphoned off $s ... so if the new guys are truely "for the people" they may get abetter deal.
