Last month AHMAG representatives met with the Appeals Convenor to discuss Chalice Mining’s application for a Native Vegetation Clearing Permit to give further access to drill in Julimar Conservation Park north-west of Toodyay.

The Convenor has to consider five appeals and whether to: allow the permit to proceed as granted; recommend further conditions for the permit, or allow the appeals and reject the permit.

AHMAG advocated that the clearing permit should be rejected because numerous clearing principles would be breached and that it was “the thin edge of the wedge” leading to a large open-cut mining operation which would totally compromise the ecological integrity of Julimar and surrounding areas.

Once the Convenor’s report is complete the Minister for Environment and Climate Action will make a decision (although the permit was originally granted by the Department of Mines and Petroleum – putting the fox in charge of the hen house).

With this in mind AHMAG wrote to Minister of Mines and Petroleum Bill Johnston (and also WA Premier Mark McGowan, Minister for Environment and Climate Action Reece Whitby, and the Attorney General, Minister for Electoral Affairs John Quigley), seeking an urgent meeting with Mr Johnston.

AHMAG is alarmed at the collapse of proper government process and the widely-held assumption that “it’s going to happen”. This statement has been made directly to AHMAG by government MPs, government agencies and Chalice Mining.

As yet, it appears that the current drilling programme in the Julimar Conservation Park, supported by the confidential Chalice Conservation Management Plan, has not been subjected to any process of scrutiny by the community.

How can ‘it’ be ‘going to happen’ ahead of the ‘robust processes’ required for such an environmentally and socially controversial project?
