Lithium hydroxide price was higher than lithium carbonate price as lithium hydroxide was growing faster. But recently lithium carbonate price is overtaking lithium hydroxide. That makes hard rock (spodumene concentrates converting) mine is not that attractive.

Greenbushes mine is probably the only one low cost producer. Other producers like PLS, converting to lithium hydroxide, break even cost is around US$6,000 per ton.
Where GLN is likely to produce battery grade lithium carbonate at a very low cost, US$3,518 per ton. If were required to convert to lithium hydroxide, usual cost for conversion is around US$1,500 per ton, so to use GLN's brine resource, total cost would be around $4,818 per ton to produce lithium hydroxide, which is still 20% cheaper than other main hard rock mines.

At the moment, lithium-iron-phosphate (LFP) that use lithium carbonate, could be a safer path for automakers worried about supply security. Also LFP batteries are to bring a lower-cost vehicle to market in China.

Don't forget, grade is king, not every deposit can directly produce battery grade lithium carbonate. GLN's neighbour, Livent, has been producing battery grade lithium carbonate for years. GLN is to use low technology, low energy, in other words, use Proved technology to produce Battery grade lithium carbonate at a very low cost.
