Excellent post 8horse. Well considered and laid out to easily understand. Having worked in the mining/oil & gas sector for a few decades, here and overseas I am well experienced in the boom and bust cycles. The trick, is to pick the troughs and peaks when investing (obviously). It's a Warren Buffet sought of thing. Why people think in a trough that it will never get any better always amazes me. People posting on HC that... 'We will never see $3 again', like they can predict the future, and that somehow this commodity won't be cyclical. Wow... have a look at some historical commodity graphs why don't you.
I learnt a great lesson in 2008, where I watched everything crash and thought I should start investing but was too scared too. I didn't repeat that mistake in April 2020. Bought a whole lot of stock, expecting a slow recovery and was very pleasantly surprised. Trust your judgement, back long term trends in technology and the economy, and the commodities that support them...and back companies with solid management who have personally invested and are pushing to move projects forward. Can you think of a company like that? That to me is a recipe for success!
