The competition to secure enrolments for 2018 is well underway.
I cannot ever remember seeing such promotion of incentives within centres as they strive to secure and increase enrolments for 2018.
Open days with sausage sizzles, face painting and jumping castles. Coles vouchers, iPads, two weeks free care, half price care for 4 weeks to introduce a friend, radio and television advertising.
Some of these offers may attract 'centre hoppers', who will enrol, stay long enough to qualify for the incentive, incur debt, leave and move on to their next centre. The incentives will do little to attract families who are well informed about quality education and care.
The centres who have passionate staff, who continually offer individual professional development to those staff and who connect with their local community are the ones who are currently reporting decent occupancy and firm enrolments for 2018. High quality centres never experience 'seasonality'.
There is little that can be done to stop local councils continually approving plans for bigger centres in areas already reporting oversupply. If there is no control over proposed centre developments, waiting lists will remain a thing of the past and occupancy will continue to decline in a large majority of centres.
