The following article from the United States relates to “the weird and increasingly expensive world of skin substitutes”, with specific focus on InnovaMatrix, an extracellular matrix made from pig’s placenta which received FDA 510(k) clearance in 2020.
A statement in the article that the Medicare-approved rate in South Carolina for the InnovaMatrix product was US$1030 per sq cm had me gobsmacked (BTM is perhaps ~ US$10 per sq cm). Given the company website touted affordability as one of the benefits of InnovaMatrix, I thought the $1030 figure must be a typo. I eventually managed to find a Medicaid fee schedule for the State of Nevada, and it had a listed rate of US$985 per sq cm, suggesting that the figure quoted in the article was not an error.
Quite bizarre.
