    I guess another way you can look at this process happening is when you get an injury to your body where the dermis is damaged, you know the type, one where you bang your leg on the tow bar of a car etc, it bleeds profusely, the blood congeals forming a scab which temporarily seals the wound, around the scab you will notice that it is red, this is the extra blood flow trying to help the epidermis repair itself, if the scab is removed before it should be it will bleed again, if you leave the scab on, in time it will just fall off and not bleed because their is sufficient epidermis growth to seal the wound and the redness will be gone, this so called inflammatory response is perhaps worded wrongly, as the way I see it is that it is just a normal body response to help heal the wound by increasing blood flow and nerve stimulation of the epidermis, it is just normal body function IMHO
    This is just how smaller wounds can repair themselves, larger areas require some sort of skin stem cell replacement because the would is just too large to heal by itself.
