99plonnko - $5k invested over 10 years @ 5% interest p/a indeed equates to $8144.47, however once you factor in tax and inflation your looking at more like 2-3% at best. Fully franked dividends from a blue chip stock like BHP or CBA would be a better bet, not to mention the potential for capital growth.
Still, most of us are in the stock market for the thrill of 'striking it rich'. It's the new frontier of speculating. Our forefathers used to pan for gold out west. We sit at a computer and sift through numbers, charts, reports and announcements hoping to strike it rich.
