Talk about averages in anything can be misleading - it all depends on what averages you're referring to:

Here's a pure volume chart for the XAO for the past couple of months:

5 Day now above the 13 Day Average.

The "quality" of the volume is also an aspect to be considered, i.e., the amount of volume going into upside and downside issues. The Decliners Volume today was almost 1 billion. That's the highest figue since 21 March - and that was affected by Options Expiry. So volume "quality" today was very poor. Probably so poor as to require a pause or some upside movement.
