There are pros & cons associated with compulsory voting ...
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Compulsory_voting
Only 22 countries in the world have it and only 11 enforce it with punitive measures, including Australia.
I am about to run out to the end of a limb on this topic.
In the Australian context, does it encourage the Bogan and Donkey vote made with little comprehension or interest in issues, where parties like PUP, Sex Party, Motor Enthusiasts Party are given undue legitimacy, etc, where shock jocks like Alan Jones can wield undue influence?
I am mulling the negative influence of compulsory voting in Australia, particularly when magnified by our system of manipulative preferential voting.
Australia needs a decade of majority governments that thrive or are cast aside by their policies and performance and that have some "buffer" from the negative impacts of social media's ability to mislead and misrepresent.
