    for win98 do

    ctrl-alt-del (will show you what's running, highlight and End task will kill it)

    start->programs->accessories->system tools

    and check running tasks in Software Environment (make sure only ones you need are running)

    also some other things in a Software Enviro (like Startup Programs)
