I think we are almost there, thanks everybody. It turns out that rabbit routes through eftel. Rather than specifying a proxy server, I will try hard-wiring a DNS server first (comsec suggest opendns.com or code.google.com/speed/public-dns) and rabbit prefers the optus DNS server. If that doesn't work, I will try the proxy server approach.
