Perth stockbroker to stand trial on insider trading charge

A WA Supreme Court trial date will be set next month for the insider trading case against Perth stockbroker David Michael, after he said he would plead not guilty at a committal mention today.

The 49-year-old first appeared in the Perth Magistrate's Court in January on four counts of breaching the insider trading provisions of the Corporations Act.

The evidence against Mr Michael is understood to have come to light through phone taps undertaken as a broader probe by ASIC and the AFP more than six years ago.

It is believed the charges against Mr Michael, who worked for Tolhurst Noall at the time of the alleged offences, relate to market sensitive information allegedly received in August 2002 about engineering contractor Monadelphous.

If convicted, Mr Michael faces up to five years jail and/or a $22,000 fine.
