That's your point of view but I found this excerpt from an article in The Australian regarding the Virgin/Air New Zealand tie up a few months back -
'However, analysts see the move as a positive and believe it stands a better chance of success than the failed attempt in 2002-03 by Qantas and Air New Zealand to form an equity partnership.
One of the reasons for this is that a Virgin Blue-Air NZ partnership would comprise 50 to 55 per cent of the market as opposed to the 80 per cent the Qantas deal would have taken up.
They also note that airlines have been doing it tough in the trans-Tasman market.'
