Conference focuses on world's energy supply

    Tuesday June 9, 2009, 10:24 am

The world's future energy supply is set to be discussed at an international uranium conference in Darwin this week.

More than 300 delegates from around the world are expected to attend the Institute of Mining and Metallurgy International Uranium Conference.

"The key areas being discussed are exploration and development, geology, environment," chair of the conference, Mark Chalmers, said.

"But it's really a technical exchange for professionals in the industry.

"It's really about world's best practice and how to best communicate information amongst people interested and involved in the industry.

Mr Chalmers says Australia's uranium industry will also be a focus.

"The basic thing with uranium is the fact that there's a global demand and people are concerned about global warming.

"They are also concerned about long term energy supplies and Australia ... having the largest resource in the world, is getting a lot of attention.

Justin Tutty from the Environment Centre NT says uranium is not the answer to the debate on climate change.

"The problems we have with nuclear power, beyond strong public opposition, are just that it is too slow to deploy and too costly.

"We have got so many better options, especially here in the Northern Territory with our wealth of renewable resources.

"Nuclear is never going to get a go."
