Re "hydroponics has absolutely massive potential."
Exactly - and re 3D - for example:
"stackable rotary hydroponic garden space" etc is a happening thing; eg an ASX listed Co "is currently completing the first phase of its proposed 40,000 sq. ft. state-of-the-art cultivation and processing facility located in Kelowna, British Columbia, Canada. Phase One of the Facility is comprised of approximately 2,000 sq. ft. of grow rooms which XXX expects will be outfitted with XXX Hydroponic Garden Systems (installed inarrays of four units, two high).
The above illustrates the massive scale of commercial 3D hydroponics getting underway, with lighting needed. I agree with your comment, we are at a tipping points in numerous directions, where measurement and control of facilities (often including lighting) is required, beyond homes and buildings.
And by way of further example, the reference to Roots by @Gemmax dovetails into this "factory farming" scenario too, again measurement and control is needed
