This article misses a fundamental point. Copper exports of 365,000 tonnes of what? Certainly not 365,000 tonnes of copper.

Also no mention of the DRC Mining Review which started mid-2007 and is still not finalized. The impact this has had on mining investment in the DRC has been enormous. Companies that could have raised equity and debt earlier this year could not because the Mining Review was still outstanding, and now with the collapse of the financial markets and metal prices since September, the legs have been cut from under the mining industry.

When will the DRC government wake up to reality? The Deputy Mines Minister Victor Kasongo needs to be sacked for continuing this sham called a "Mining Review." The problem is that many DRC Government officials think that as soon as the mining review is finished, it will be back to business as usual. Unfortunately, the window of opportunity has closed and it will be a long haul back to better times.
