The equity market is about spreading risk. Generally, you would hold say 20% of your portfolio in cash, with the balance spread over 20 stocks. giving no greater exposure than 5% to each stock. Look at some of the market long term LICs, like SOL & WAM and the number & spread of companies they hold.
