Alexiflam™ FR (Military Strategy)

…While Alexium achieved all of the technical goals around flame retardancy over a year ago through various efforts with the US Department of Defense (DoD), the goal shifted to produce lighter weight and more breathable base fabrics to which our FR can then be applied. In September 2016, Alexium partnered with a large supplier to the DoD of nylon-cotton fabrics with the goal of accelerating the process of engineering a lighter and more breathable base fabric that could be married with Alexium’s cost effective and performance-enhancing FR technology to satisfy all of the DoD’s requirements.

In the period, Alexium and its fabric partner produced a finished fabric that has passed all of the DoD lab-scale performance, comfort and weight requirements. Garments have been made and they are now in the PyroMan testing phase.

Our traction in this area is now generating new opportunities for our Alexiflam™ FR chemistry, some related to military uniforms and others for commercial markets such as workwear. The industry is recognizing that Alexiflam™ FR is an excellent tool for addressing a number of gaps in these markets. Alexium is currently working with a number of partners to address significant revenue outside of the Army Combat or Marine Combat Uniforms and those efforts are underway

The Army, over the last 18 months, has quietly held four uniform trials in Hawaii, with thousands of soldiers wearing a variety of new uniform designs. The hope is to finalize a new tropical wardrobe by 2018 that is lightweight, quick-drying, comfortable, and durable. The Army examined new fabric combinations and soldiers wore Army Combat Uniforms with significant design tweaks. ..

The Army examined eight material combinations in Hawaii:

Aside from Hawaii, where he works as a jungle school instructor, Staff Sgt. Larry Aviles has trained in the jungles of Okinawa, Guam, the Philippines, and **on, Africa. And he said that when it comes to uniform materials, lighter doesn’t always mean better….

His favorite was the nylon-cotton uniform that utilized the T420HT nylon.

"I’ve taken it through the Congo, through a harsh obstacle course. I put it in every situation; the uniform came out unscathed. I didn’t feel like I was too hot or too cold. I’ve slept in that uniform. Overall it’s just a comfortable wear," he said.

…the Army will take what it learned and design a material and a uniform during 2017. Natick aims to hold final user evaluations in either the fall of 2017 or the winter of 2018.

“Next generation upgrade” to Cordura’s Nyco announced 02/03/17

… reputation for excellence might explain why the armed forces look to Cordura for dependable nylon and cotton blends to use in their clothing. Soon, these high-performance blends will be getting a next-generation upgrade.
Born from two years of research and development at the same Delaware facility responsible for the original commercialization of nylon 6,6 in the late 1960s, the latest “high tenacity” T420HT nylon 6,6 fiber offers improved performance across the board in the “Nyco” fabric blends where it will be found.

One such fabric featuring the new fiber, the 5.4 ounce per square yard Nyco Extreme, features a 55 percent T420HT and 45 percent cotton mix that Cordura claims is 18 percent lighter and 10 times more breathable than 50 percent T420 and 50 percent cotton, 6.5 ounce per square yard military spec fabrics using the original fiber based on preliminary laboratory test results.

The jump in performance stems from tweaks to the nylon 6,6 at the molecular fiber level. The upgrades allow for the manufacture of lightweight, abrasion resistant, high tensile strength fabrics that hold up through extreme abuse with the potential of lower replace and repaired frequencies.

“We listened to the needs of the US military,” says Cindy McNaull, global Cordura brand and marketing director. “Every time you see a US military uniform, that’s us.” You can expect to see the new T420HT fiber used in clothing worn in all branches of the military, she notes. “Lighter and stronger” is the goal, one Cordura always works towards.

Lighter, stronger, more breathable, quick to dry materials have obvious battlefield advantages, but what about advantages for the consumer market? Cordura envisions the T420HT fiber making its way to lifestyle denim products like super durable skateboarding jeans and rugged workwear that hold up better than many existing products without placing new aesthetic requirements onto apparel makers. Clothing manufacturer Dickies is one of the early adopters of the new material and has plans to use it in upcoming apparel lines….

When asked about other upcoming material improvements, such as fabrics with greater flame resistant properties, Cindy at Cordura says, “hold that thought”.

If all of these pieces are indeed connected, and if the Pyroman testing phase is passed, might we expect that production of the new FR NyCo uniforms will commence in approximately one year’s time? Also, is it possible that sales of Alexiflam FR into workwear will come first?

The Sept. 1 date mentioned in the ArmyTimes article is confusing, Hottod. The US 2018 fiscal year begins 1 October 2017 and ends 30 September 2018. The first quarter of that fiscal year therefore would be Oct-Dec 2017, which also would be the fall of 2017 as referred to.

My interpretation of the references that you have linked is that NyCo army uniform production should commence sometime within 2018, but in preparation for this it is intended that contracts with vendors will be arranged by the end of 2017. Also, as I understand it any Alexium contract will be with a partnered fabric vendor rather than directly with the DoD.

Any sales in the workwear market should not be subjected to comparable bureaucratic delays.
