"Net economy long way to go: Conroy" - The Australian IT, 18 June 2008
{BEGINS} "THE unresolved issues of privacy and identity management must be addressed if the internet economy is to reach its true potential, Communications Minister Stephen Conroy has told an OECD meeting of telecommunications ministers in Seoul today.....
"Governments, civil society and industry must collaborate to develop safer, more robust and reliable devices," he said. "Compare the user experience of buying and using a broadband internet-connected device with that of buying and using a motor vehicle. "Most people have been trained and hold a driver's licence, the car has in-built safety features, the roads are comparatively safe and other drivers mostly obey common rules. "On the internet, you are basically on your own. You have to learn as you go along, chances are you'll never know or use all of its features, the device is not always reliable and its safety features have often been turn off without your knowledge.
... Senator Conroy said cross-border co-operation between enforcement authorities was needed to achieve an effective response to the challenges." {ENDS}
