    I can understand where you are coming from, but I don't think that conscription is the answer for Australia. I have cousins in Germany and Sweden. My German Grandma had a young bloke (conscientious objector) who visited two or three times a week & helped with cleaning, shopping etc. He did his year's service as a home carer for old folk - now that I can support.

    A great way for our young kids to get out is to go bush and try jack / jillerooing for a year or two imo, or go backpacking and see something of the world before it is too late. University can come later, part time if necessary.

    I was very lucky - I joined the merchant navy. Like you, I would give my eye teeth to do it all over again.
