Is it about time Australia introduced Conscription?
Personally, I believe it is.
Many disagree I know, however, I believe the benefits go beyond just military service.
I believe that enforced military service would likely result (as it has in other countries) in a more civilised society where impressionable youth can learn valuable life experiences such as respect, team importance, self reliance, discipline (something sadly lacking in many today) and may actually give purpose to those who have little guidance, direction or interest in their future.
I heard a radio interview today with a lady who had experience in Finland where she detailed the system as it has operated there for many decades.
Compulsory military service is for an intensive 6 months. For conscientious objectors it is not as intensive, but is over a 12 month period.
She said that many who experienced the training and life lessons gained have actually moved into permanent military service including higher education.
Here is a list of countries that have conscription. Australia should be on this list, but it is unlikely with our weak, self-centered society and governments who typically fear anything so controversial, never mind the positive intent behind such suggestions. Never mind the betterment for our country.
