"Uranium continues to be a headache for the coalition
During the national meeting, the Siumuts intensively discussed how the party should deal with the uranium issue in the future.

Here it was emphasized that mining projects throughout the country will be supported - even if they can lead to uranium being discharged.

With the election of Erik Jensen, however, the party accepts Naalakkersuisut's line that there is zero tolerance against extracting uranium from Greenland's underground.

However, that promise only applies as long as the coalition lasts. Thus, the governing parties are still deeply divided on the issue.

    - Uranium continues to be a challenge for the parties. Both Siumut and IA will have to make concessions if the cooperation is to continue after the next Inatsisartut election, says Sten Lund
Therefore, there is a good chance that the next Inatsisatut election will also be irradiated by the uranium issue, just as it was the case in 2021, when the last parliamentary elections were held.

However, Siumut promises that local citizens must be involved before mines that will discharge uranium can be opened. Whether the citizens' attitude can actually slow down future mining projects is, however, unknown.

The Siumuts also agreed that they will demand the appointment of a naalakkersuisoq for statehood. It must help to ensure that a direction is set fo Greenland's path to independence."
