Hello Mistyrains, welcome back and well said. It was Malcolm Turnbull’s more small ‘l’ liberal progressive persona that made him extremely popular before and just after the dumping of Abbott. He, however, because of the undermining by the Abbott supporting right wing conservatives appeared to choose to placate them and that saw his popularity decline and at the election barely managed to scrape home. Since then he is still perceived to be a prisoner of the conservatives and both his and the govt’s standing has sunk even further. He already faces headwinds from the disparate Senate but being seen to have to pander to the hot head conservative right is whats causing the greatest damage.
There is imo a clear message for Mr Turnbull from that. He needs to stand up to the conservative arm and ignore their undermining threats. Public opinion will then strengthen his way and the dissidents will have to clam up.
If he continues in the same vein as before, his and the govt’s standing wont improve and ironically those same right wing conservatives causing the bother will try and use the bad polls to get him replaced.
If Malcolm Turnbull cannot regain the positive liberal progressiveness that people were hoping to see from him then imo the rot will continue. The ball is his court and those who are now inextricably aligned to him such as Julie Bishop and Scott Morrison and other prominent Liberals.
cheers
