Thats why you invest with one of the banks that has been a bit more conservative with lending LVRs as I have previously mentioned.
The cash banks such as ANZ have raised has not just been to 'invest in cash' as you say, have you not noticed the consolidation/acquisitions in recent times by the majors ie. RBS assets, ING WMgmt & Landmark for ANZ?????? They are not cash in my book.
Aside from this the big 4 (from memory) are all inside the top 20 banks in the world strength wise so if they go pear shaped chances are so will the rest of the share market.
They also pay a good dividend and some ie. ANZ have good prospects for growth considering the recent and future purchases they have/will make.
