one assumes that a reasonable and normal person would think that the acceptability of 'democrats' or 'republicans' would be two different issues

it kind of sounds like that you can't look at it that way though.

And interestingly enough - we are discussing a Presidential election. In which, one side is talking about bringing in a massive change in the civil service - all because of the change in one position - the office of President.
a reasonable person would also question such a move.

The mere suggestion, the slightest thought about it - suggests some kind of dictatorship. The kind of thing one expects in some tin post steamy or sandy place.
