Great to see some research on this.
One thing that is noticeable is that we would now only have one or two percent [just a guess by me] of the toads we had when I used to play toad hockey. After a rainy night there would be dead toads splattered all over the roads. Seldom see one now.
I can think of many possible reasons including to demise of the backyard chook pen but there is no doubt that adaption by native species is part of it. I read that our snakes are evolving smaller heads because the bigger the toad, the more venomous.
