Visiting The World’s Deepest Open Pit Mine - Kennecott Copper Mine

The copper mining process can be summarised in several steps:

• Drilling and blasting: holes are drilled and filled with explosives to break up the rock.
• Loading: the broken rock is loaded into trucks.
• Crushing: the rock is crushed into smaller pieces.
• Concentration: the copper ore is separated from the waste rock using a flotation process.
• Chemicals are added to the crushed rock and water mixture to make the copper particles bond to air bubbles, which then float to the surface and are collected.
• Smelting: the concentrate is melted and the copper is separated from the other metals.
• Electrolysis: the nearly pure copper is further refined in an electrolytic cell to produce pure copper.
