The most effective way to remedy increasingly dislocated supply imbalances is through higher copper prices, as this will incentivise exploration along the curve. But with prices below US$4/lb currently, incentivisation will probably remain in short supply until a material change in price dynamics.
The scarcity of shovel-ready projects and the challenges associated with their development exacerbate the situation. And with many of the world’s largest mines now past peak production, it will take several years to right-size the current imbalance given the extent of new demand.
