Yes, I must say that this thought has crossed my mind too. But the consequences of a local disturbance interrupting production could be a disaster for AVM - just look at sons of gwalia, gympie gold, and others.
But I do wonder whether AVM could use a passive hedging approach by purchasing put options on physical stock, or put options over future contracts. ???
