i've always thought delta could buy in at some point. e.g.

it goes with their philosophy of making money off other airlines - like their fuel refinery which they paid $150M for and made a $300M in profit in one year (2015).
also delta has strong ties to Air France-KLM, Virgin Atlantic, Alitalia,
and are one of the few airlines to fly to all six permanently inhabited continents, along with British Airways, Emirates, Etihad Airways, Korean Air, Qantas, Qatar Airways, Singapore Airlines, South African Airways and United Airlines.
