Of course we can but that requires a buy in from everyone. It would induce a massive inflation increase in living. Do you truly expect that to happen in a period where retail buying will be pushed to kick start our economy again? I don't. Let's be honest, in today's multi cultural make up, a reasonable proportion of Australians wouldn't give a rat's ass, the cheaper the better. In the long term the only hope would be government action but historically even the government has often when given a choice purchased from overseas over Australian made. You are right it would require a total rethink but I think it would go into the too hard basket, and if tried could be political suicide.
