The most accurate comparison would be the devastating effect of the introduction of what was (to the Europeans) benign diseases to the American Indians. Except the whole world is now the Indians.
If you think compounding interest is impressive, behold the unfolding exponential epidemic curve. It will be bad and the response to it may well be worse.
Dismissing this crisis puts all of us at risk.
