I'm not being pig-headed or fanciful here nor do i suggest we stop international trade, domestic manufacturing or whatever. We aim for as much as we can get. We temporarily alter the economic approach to safeguard economic output. Incumbent upon that is spreading the pain to take from other supported sectors to support those hit by travel restrictions. It's all temporary of course.

Your way is to watch more of it crumble, declaring it is the best way to avoid 'devastation' but then allowing it to happen. We need space, we need preparedness, we need smarts to do the game-theory number crunching. I haven't drilled down into specifics but intuitively I suspect it is the wiser path.

my comment is - if you shut the gate - you are economically devastated - end of story

What would you do if you did shut the gate - - you MUST open it eventually

what are you going to do with the time you have expensively purchased?
