Sorry, to answer your post more directly, the reason why specs rise so much and fall so much is because they have little fundamental value, thus the only thing that moves them is peoples emotions.
In a true bear market the only way to make money is to be short, options or at the bank.
Gold etc are safe havens to a certain extent.
