The full importance of this Force Protection announcement cannot be underestimated.
What happened after the Sept 11th terrorist attack sent the US into a tailspin, the US DOE panicked and ordered some stuff from metalstorm, I think it was the ADWS from memory, but the US then got it's act together and set up the Homeland Security Office, the metalstorm DOE deal got placed on hold until the weapons were certified I suppose? but once this Force Protection is approved by the DOD then the weapons within that will become COTS items is what I have read (Commercial off the shelf) once this is done it is my understanding that any department that comes under the umbrella of Homeland Security can purchase goods that are deemed as COTS up to a certain value on one docket, I think from memory the value was $5 million, but don't quote me on that, any other order above that figure needs to be ratified by government is my understanding, but as far as the $5 million per docket, I believe they can do more than one order without needing approval, so this Force Protection may end up being bigger than Ben Hur!
