The did assist Australia in East Timor, not with troops but with nice big ships just outside territorial waters, in other words they were there to stop others mixing in.
As to what's in it for them, we can provide a nice big friendly country where they can base anything they want in the Asian area without wondering if they are going to be shot in the back
