    Like your thinking and I agree that the future of batteries lies not only in EV's but mainly for domestic use.
    Each household to have their own energy storage either supplied by solar or the grid.
    Having worked in the Power Industry I have reservations on grid storage as the main problem being DC voltage cannot be transformed practically. The use of AC voltage allows power to be transmitted for great distances at circa 330kv/500kv and then transformed to voltages 33, 11, 3.3, 415 to the consumer.
    The high voltage initially can be supported by smaller conductors hence lower current as voltage and current are inversly proportional. At the consumers end the voltage is lower but the current (amps) is sufficient to run all the appliances.
    So eventually as you point out existing power plants should be able to supply consumers O/N to charge their batteries although big industrial plants will still require sufficient supply during operational periods.
