Telstras got the best coverage to be honest. Im sick of my Optus cover and previously 3 covers in certain areas. Wireless broadband is the best for Telstra too according to buddies of mine. For a fanatic non-iMac user (i.e do not own anything electronic with an "i" in front of it) their range or mobiles available albeit slightly more expensive plans, IMHO, are worth the money just from the reliability point of view.
I believe that it is big money that are playing on the fears of others and profit from this. Im topping up every 10c drop and am only 20% full. I am happy to keep buying even below $2.50.
