I always thought that was the definition of a "fiat" currency. Fiat = Law.
The law said in part (or so I thought) that it must be accepted as payment of debts. It might have been on a different forum completely but I was told it is legal to refuse cash though. The electronic equivalent satisfies the law. I think that discussion was regards hire cars and hotels.
It stinks anyway.
