check out what happened to gold during the first 2 thirds of the GFC. Its the last third of US recession which is that nasty bugger (according to Ken Fisher at least). its more of a leading indicator for me. not interested in the latest ooshie fadmight have a glance in the home straight, but better off doing the hard yards in the library on companies at that stage.
