I did a study of the book of Revelation, admittedly, a long time ago.
The view that the letters to the seven churches were written to real churches of the time and addressed these people under persecution made a lot of sense to me. The underlying messages can be seen as timeless - but to try and tie revelations to specific events 2000 years down the track doesn't make sense to me.
I doubt the author or the people at the time Revelation was written had much interest in events of our time any more than we could be concerned about what is going to happen in the year 4000 - too many pressing problems to worry about that.
