Wallygog, perhaps the way to go is like with ebay, where you rate something for more than one attribute, ie funny, informative, technical, speculative.
Perhaps the thumb icon is too convenient for people to click willy nilly, if they click on it they get a submenu asking for specific rating as per catagories mentioned it might make for a good filter, Ie you can search for humour only & piss yourself laughing all day. :)
