    • Mr. Liban Muse Bogor, the nephew of Puntland named Board of Directors.

The Australian firm that signed a controversial exploration agreement with Somalia’s State of Puntland administration in mid-2005 has released a letter May 25, 2006 detailing new developments. Range Resources, Ltd., named Mr. Liban Muse Bogor and Mr. Toufic Rahi to the Company’s Board of Directors.

The letter, which was signed by Range’s executive chairman Mike Povey, also discussed the recent exchange of letters between Somali prime minister Ali Muhammad Gedi and Puntland president Mohamud “Adde” Muse Hirsi. Premier Gedi’s May 18th letter to the Puntland leader noted that only the Somali federal government had the legal right to authorize exploration in Somalia. Puntland president Adde Muse’s May 20th response was to announce that Puntland would cut ties with the federal government as long as Gedi was prime minister.

Range’s May 25th letter also mentioned the “authenticity” of Premier Gedi’s letter, which was posted on various Web sites, it alleged. However, it is important to note that the Somali federal government responded to the letter from Puntland via the information minister’s press conference on May 23.

As Garowe Online has reported, Mr. Liban Muse Bogor, the nephew of Puntland president Adde Muse Bogor, has been in Australia on an unannounced visit for some time. Range Resources’ decision to name the nephew of the Puntland leader to its Board of Directors presents a “conflict of interest,” some believe. Previously, a Range official publicly stated that the Board of Directors of Consort Private, Ltd., included ministers in the Puntland government.

In another development, Jim Martinis, a member of Range’s Board of Directors, resigned this week but did not provide a reason.
