In two recent studies, mortality rates due to viral respiratory infection were clearly shown to be related to vitamin D3 levels. In the first study, the mortality rate due to viral respiratory tract infection was nearly 100% when vitamin D levels were below 19 ng/ml.4 At 25 ng/ml the death rate was still high at 85% but started dropping rapidly, and by the level of 34 ng/ml there was a 0% mortality rate. This study showed the target for increasing survival when dealing with a respiratory virus is a blood level of 25-OH-D3 of at least 34 ng/ml is critical.

In the second study, a blood level of 25-OH-D3 less than 20 ng/ml on admission to hospital in Belgium was associated with a 3.7-fold increase in the odds of dying from a viral respiratory infection. Overall 59% of the patients admitted for a viral upper respiratory tract infection were vitamin D deficient on admission: 47% of females and 67% of males.

A search of ClinicalTrials.gov reveals there are currently close to 40 ongoing clinical trials looking at vitamin D3 in respiratory tract infections around the world.
