    Unfortunately as you found our data, well that which we can access at least doesn't allow us to easily compare covid to influenza death numbers. Pretty much every study I've seen is consistent on Covid have a much higher case fatality rate than influenza. There are all sorts of confounding factors too when considering absolute numbers of deaths - the effect of lockdowns, masks, vaccination. We best look to data from other countries to try and compare.     Thing is with Covid given how incredibly contagious it is, even if it had the same mortality rate as flu, (I would expect almost every person in Australia to get it ) the absolute number of people affected overwhelms the health system as we're seeing now. Mind you knowing the public health system it wouldn't take much to tip it into chaos.
