I thought higher melanin meant lower Vitamin D.
I was of the understanding that Afro-Americans have low Vitamin D levels.
In simple terms, fairer skinned people developed from darker skinned ancestors as they moved to higher latitudes because they could make more Vitamin D than their darker skinned grand and great-grand parents and or their siblings and cousins that retained higher levels of melanin ....... so the evolutionary story goes.
