The mask is an air filter , so best to soak the mask in oil after the kerosene then squeese out the excess before use . The kero helps the oil bond to the filter. It not only improves filtration but provides a better seal to the mating surface (ie., the face ). As you are a smoker it will also minimize flammability . May I suggest using gear oil in this instance for it's unique aroma .
