How easy or hard it is to catch has no bearing on whether masks work or not. Either they work to some degree or they don't. In any given circumstance, there may be any number of reasons why they don't work.....some walk around with the mask over their mouth but leave their nose exposed, or the wrong mask, poorly fitted, saturated with exhalations, etc.

Nor do I support compulsory wearing of masks. We make our decisions and live with the results.
