Vaccination also works to decongest the health system, ensuring others get the treatment they need (Covid or non-Covid related).
Australia has been far more diligent in their approach to lockdowns - and this is the reason (in addition to less density and water borders) why we've had 'so few' cases. You only need to look as far as America or the UK, to show what happens when things get out of control.
The reason for the country being conservative is to avoid things getting the way of the USA/UK. Having said that, I'm hoping as we reach the 80-90% vaccination levels amongst the 16+ population, we can start opening things up relatively 'back to normal'.
